Gary Fredricks, Livestock and Dairy Area Agent and Cowlitz County Administrative Director.

Gary addresses all aspects of small farm management including raising livestock and crop production in Washington. His responsibilities include information on gardening and small farm production that targets both youth and adults. Gary is the Administrative Director for Cowlitz County. Jennifer Leach, 4-H Youth Development Area Agent and Wahkiakum County Administrative Director.

The 4-H Youth Development Program provides hands-on learning opportunities for youths, K-12. The program is conducted by adult volunteers in partnership with WSU faculty and county staff. Life skills are acquired through fun, experiential 4-H educational activities. Debbie Zbaeren, Nutrition Education Assistant for the Food Stamp Family Nutrition Education Program (Food$ense).

This program targets limited income families and provides nutrition education through classes, demonstrations and a monthly newsletter, "Food, Facts & Fun." Classes are held throughout Cowlitz County and are tailored to suit the needs of each group. Class participants receive educational handouts and when possible, hands on sessions. Audiences include: preschool children, elementary age children, teen parents, young adults, adults and senior citizens. Debbie offers classes in topics including the Food Guide Pyramid, food safety, shopping strategies, feeding picky eaters, quick and easy skillet meals and other food related topics. Sandra Brown, Area Extension Educator-Food Safety.

Programs for adults and children provide research-based information in the areas of food safety, food-borne illnesses, and food storage. Safe food preservation techniques in the areas of canning, freezing, and dehydrating are also offered through this program Cowlitz County. Sandy also supervises the Food Stamp Family Nutrition Education Programs in Cowlitz, Wahkiakum and Clark counties. For a fun, interactive site on nutrition check out: www.nutrition.gov.
